Milkor ( Pty ) Ltd is still a privately owned South African company, internationally renowned for its 40mm MGL. Over the last twenty-eight years, Milkor has provided in excess of 50000 weapons to law enforcement and military agencies in more than thirty nations around the planet from less-lethal to deadly weapons.

This weapon is a light, semi-automatic, low speed, shoulder-fired 40 mm grenade launcher with a six-round capacity and a progressively-rifled barrel. It uses the well-proven revolver principle that will deliver 40mm rounds to an effectual range of 375m at a quick firing rate of 6 rounds in 3 seconds. A selection of rounds such as HE, HEAT, HEDP, anti-riot rod, irritant or pyrotechnic can be employed ; the cylinder can be loaded or unloaded rapidly.

Milkor furnishes its MGLs with adjustable occluded eye gunsights ( OEG ) which has been designed in order to identify the range to the target and can be straight away adjusted accordingly. It enables the user to extend the hit chance at ranges of at least 375 metres. The range quadrant is graduated in 25-metre increments, and the aim automatically compensates for drift.The occluded eye gunsight is a collimating sight providing a single aiming spot; the firer sights with both eyes open with the effect the aiming spot is superimposed on the target, with both target and spot in pointy focus. The collimating sight encompasses a radio-luminous lamp which supplies the spot contrast and that has a life of approximately 10 years.

New wants lead to new innovations.The 40mm US-Mark 4 is a light-weight under-barrel Grenade Launcher with advance safety aspects which can be attached to any modern attack weapon.The 40mm US-Mark 4 may be used on any of the present mainline attack weapons such as the R4-Galil, M16, AK47, G3 and SG540 ( with minor adjustments), thus enabling the user with a 40mm Grenade Launch capability in conjunction with a 7,62mm or 5,7mm. Recently ongoing developments and new light-weight materials led to the manufacturing of the 40mm US-Mark 4S, which weighs a superb 735g! This new weapon accommodates a specialised Picatinny interface with external Picatinny mounting, superb for add-ons like laser lights or torches. Similarly it has a clip-on/clip-off mechanism for the Picatinny assembly, a built-in safety on the trigger and a mechanism that cocks the weapon mechanically when loading.

The new Stopper Mark two, and 37/38mm and 40mm Pistol Mark two shares logistics to the extent the application needed by the application required by the customer will determine which barrel should be fitted, starting from 37/38 or 40mm smoothbore to the 40mm grooved deadly barrel. Stopper Mark two uses the same parts as the Pistol-family. The longer Stopper Mark two barrel offers longer distances and better accuracy. It also has a new butt-stock.

The Milkor solid-state Sight idea ( no moving parts ), with embedded gradients and reticule, covered with shock-resistant material. Nearly all explosive 40mm ammo possesses fuzes which activate only after the grenade has safely cleared the operator, (a distance of 15-31m, though some of them were produced with only 7m clearance for house-to-house combat ) forestalling undesired 'accidents'. US Naval budget for Programmable 40mm Grenades
The US Navy Warfare Center in Crane, Indianca has awarded NAMMO Raufoss AS Medium & Large Caliber Division in Raufoss, Norway a big million fixed price contract for 40k rounds of MK 285 40mm hi-tech pre-fragmented, high explosive ammo. The NAMMO AS 40mm PPHE ammo implements an electronically adjustable time fuze ( Mk438 ), that has both point detonating and self-destruct functions. The programming allows the round to be fired from an automatic grenade launcher and detonate to hit targets hidden out of sight, on rooftops, behind corners, inside buildings or in ditchs, etc. Work will be done in Raufoss, Norway, and is anticipated to be complete by November 2007. The contract was not competitively procured.

NAMMO was recently taken over by Patria Oyj of Finland, though it also remains partially owned by the Norwegian government. In addition to 40mm grenades, the firm also manufactures specialty sniper ammo for US departments.

Rheinmetall Waffe Munition GmbH, conducting business as Niederlassung NICO Trittau in Trittau, Germany, just received $39 million for delivery order 0003 under a previously awarded firm-fixed indefinite-delivery/ indefinite-quantity contract (M67854-06-D-1027) for the production of 1,496,000 40mm MK281 Mod zero Practice Cartridges, and accompanying non-recurring costs. The MK 281 is a coaching cartridge composed of 32 rounds joined in a belt for use in the Mk19 Grenade Machine Gun. On impact with the ground, the cartridges expel a non-toxic orange dye that is visible up tiny of 1,200 meters in normal daylight conditions, and a chemiluminescent insert that is visible up to 500 meters in darkness ( particularly with night vision goggles).
